“Unchained Melody” is a song recorded by the vocal soul group The Stylistics. It’s from their 1976 album Once Upon a Jukebox which contains covers of popular songs including “Only You”, and “My Funny Valentine”. The song “Unchained Melody” first appeared in a 1955 film about prisoners titled Unchained. Alex North was originally hired to write the score for the film. He was then asked to write a song based on the movie’s prison theme. North contacted Hy Zaret to write the lyrics but Zaret turned him down, saying he was busy painting his house. With some coaxing, he took the job but refused the producer’s request to include ‘unchained’ in the lyrics. The beautiful ballad is one of the most recorded songs of all time.
